Winthrop's Swim-a-Thon set for Sunday, April 10 at Hofstra Swim Center - Archived
March 23, 2011

Swimmers of all skill levels are invited to enjoy a fun-filled morning while raising funds for a worthy cause at Winthrop-University Hospital’s Tenth Annual Swim-a-Thon on Sunday, April 10 from 7:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Hofstra University’s Swim Center. Open to swimmers of all ages, the Swim-A-Thon will raise vital funds for the Hospital’s Child Life Program through which certified Child Life Specialists utilize play and education to improve children’s understanding of medical procedures; teach relaxation techniques to help young patients cope with illness or surgery, and provide emotional support for the entire family.

“Winthrop’s Swim-a-thon is a highly anticipated annual event that provides a wonderful opportunity for both children and adults to participate in community service, while enjoying a healthy activity,” said Ron Marino, DO, MPH, Associate Chairman and Director of General Pediatrics at Winthrop, and organizer of the annual fundraiser.

Schools are invited to come in groups, and community members are invited to swim or support a swimmer through a sponsorship pledge. In addition, students can earn community service hours by participating either as swimmers or as volunteers.

Participants will enjoy swim coaching by Joe Petrush from Total Immersion Swimming, massage therapy by Jennifer O’Neill, Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT), live music by the Mineola High School jazz band and Central Beat rock band, face painting by All About Kids, arts and crafts, raffles, prizes and more.

The registration fee for adults is $20; for children ages six to 18 and students with a valid school ID the fee is $10. For more information, or to register or volunteer, please visit or call (516) 663-4423.
