Mineola, NY – Winthrop-University Hospital’s Department of Medicine and its Division of Palliative Medicine & Bioethics have received accreditation from the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education for a new fellowship training program in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Winthrop is one of only two teaching hospitals on Long Island to offer an ACGME accredited Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program. The first class of two fellows are anticipated to begin training in July of 2017.
“The fellowship program builds on the Division’s palliative clinical program which is staffed by specialty trained and certified palliative physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses and social workers,” said Jeffrey Berger, MD, Chief of the Division of Palliative Medicine and Bioethics at Winthrop-University Hospital. “We are excited to offer this new training program which is yet another testament to our commitment to providing our patients with the highest quality of care.”
The clinical program already serves the educational needs of medical students and residents, in addition to nurse practitioner students. Fellows of the newly accredited program will receive training in a range of advanced symptom control modalities as well as in complex decision making, ethical analysis, and working effectively with families and within complex systems. Fellows will also train in highly regarded off-campus sites including the Pediatric Pain & Palliative Care Team (PACT) at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and the Metropolitan Jewish Health Services (MJHS®) inpatient hospice unit at the Menorah Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center in Brooklyn.
