- Winthrop-University Hospital Names Eva Chalas, MD, Physician Director of Winthrop’s Cancer Center

Mineola, NY – Winthrop-University Hospital is pleased to announce the appointment of Eva Chalas, MD, to Physician Director of Winthrop’s Cancer Center. Dr. Chalas will continue to hold her title as Director of Clinical Cancer Services and Vice Chair, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Winthrop, as she takes on new responsibilities in expanding Winthrop’s cancer treatment services throughout Long Island and Manhattan.
Dr. Chalas has dedicated her career to improving patient outcomes for those diagnosed with cancer. With a specialty in treating women with gynecologic cancers and complex gynecologic problems, Dr. Chalas continually works to enhance the services and advance knowledge in the fields of cancer prevention, early detection and treatment so that Winthrop may best serve the needs of its community.
As Physician Director of the Cancer Center, Dr. Chalas will now lead Winthrop in all of its components of cancer care, including patient outcomes and cancer care delivery. Dr. Chalas will work with the Chairs of Clinical Departments around the Hospital to enhance, develop and implement multidisciplinary best practice strategies that will not only provide world-class treatment, but will be instrumental in improving cancer avoidance and early detection of the disease.
Dr. Chalas has held leadership positions in the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Gynecologic Oncology and the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation. She has received numerous awards and been named to U.S. News and World Report’s “Top Doctors” list. Most recently, Dr. Chalas was named a “Physician of Distinction” by the American Cancer Society, and was granted the National Leadership Award by the National Republican Congressional Committee. American Registry recently recognized Dr. Chalas as one of “America’s Most Honored Professionals Top 1% 2016.” She is dedicated to clinical research, and has published and lectured extensively on the prevention and treatment of gynecologic cancers. She is also a sought after media expert, providing valuable insights for news stories relating to women’s health and cancers.
After earning her Medical Degree from Stony Brook University School of Medicine, Dr. Chalas completed her Residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at its Medical Center. She went on to be a Fellow in Gynecologic Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Chalas is Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and in Gynecologic Oncology, and is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and of the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Chalas resides in Garden City.
