Winthrop’s Diabetes Education Center Kicks off 35th Anniversary Celebration with a Special Celebrity Chef Event - Archived
February 20, 2014

In celebration of 35 years of service to the community in providing diabetes education and support to individuals with diabetes and their families, Winthrop-University Hospital’s Diabetes Education Center will host an interactive night of food, fun and fine dining with Celebrity Chef Tom Schaudel. The event, which will feature a cooking demonstration along with a delicious three-course meal, will take place on Monday, March 10, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. at Jewel, located in The Atrium Room, at 400 Broadhollow Rd. in Melville.

“Thirty-five years of service to our community is certainly a momentous milestone for Winthrop’s Diabetes Education Center,” said Lynne Chimon, MS, RD, BC-ADM, CDN, CDE, Director of Winthrop’s Diabetes Education Center. “We are pleased to partner with Chef Tom Schaudel on what is promised to be an enjoyable and informative event for all those living with diabetes, their friends and loved ones.”

The cost for the event is $40 per person. Please call Winthrop’s Diabetes Education Center at (516) 663-2350 to register.

Further commemorating the Center’s 35th anniversary, free educational events are also being planned at Winthrop throughout the year including a special program on May 8 entitled, “35 Hot Topics in Diabetes,” which will provide an opportunity to hear the latest research, learn about useful self-management tools and clarify the mixed-messages associated with nutrition.

“Winthrop’s Dining Out with Diabetes Series is a perfect example of the innovative programming offered through the Diabetes Education Center,” said Virginia Peragallo-Dittko, RN, BC-ADM, CDE, FAADE, Executive Director of Winthrop’s Diabetes and Obesity Institute and Professor of Medicine at Stony Brook School of Medicine. “Many people are overwhelmed by the menu choices in restaurants and feel guilty about their food choices.  Dining in restaurants, whether casual or elegant, provides a wonderful opportunity for socialization.  Patients who have participated in the Winthrop Dining Out with Diabetes program feel empowered and learn strategies for restaurant dining and food preparation without sacrificing diabetes self-management goals. What a marvelous environment to celebrate the Diabetes Education Center’s legacy of service!”

Since opening its doors in 1979, the Diabetes Education Center has helped improve the lives of countless individuals living with diabetes through its highly regarded educational and support programs. A pioneer in the field of diabetes education, the Diabetes Education Center was the first outpatient education program in New York State accredited by the national American Diabetes Association. Today, the Center continues to equip adults and children with the knowledge and tools necessary to manage diabetes as well as provides lifestyle programs designed to prevent diabetes.
