Winthrop’s Cancer Center for Kids Benefits from Generous Hess Corporate Grant - Archived
November 13, 2012

The Cancer Center for Kids at Winthrop-University was the fortunate beneficiary of more than $5,000 raised by the Hess Corporation at its New York City Golf Outing this past summer. Motivated to give back to the Center because of a personal connection to a patient, Senior Sales Manager Robert Welch designated proceeds from the event to the CCFK and its essential therapeutic programs and services. With this donation, the Hess Corporation continues its tradition of generosity to the CCFK, having donated its world-renowned trucks to the Center’s patients for many years.

The CCFK’s psychosocial programs, a linchpin of the Center’s services, offer a wide variety of therapeutic services providing much-needed emotional support for children and families from the moment of diagnosis, through intense treatments and long-term follow-up.

Working in conjunction with the CCFK’s medical staff, the psychosocial team – comprised of a social worker, psychologist, child life and creative arts specialists – addresses emotional and behavioral concerns with compassion, energy and expertise. They meet regularly with individual patients and family members, including parents, grandparents and siblings in the outpatient clinic, the Hospital, or the patient's home. They have created a unique series of programs and services offered free of charge to patients and families. These resources are enriched by professional evaluation and testing, and the social worker’s collaborative efforts.

“Thanks to the friendship and philanthropy of the Hess Corporation, these programs can continue to flourish and grow,” said Linda Sweeney, Pediatric Development Manager for the CCFK.
