NYU Winthrop Celebrates Opening of State-of-the-Art Electrophysiology Lab

Present at the ribbon cutting were NYU Winthrop representatives (l.-r.) Kevin Marzo, MD, Chief of the Division of Cardiology; John F. Collins, President and CEO; Todd Cohen, MD, Director of Electrophysiology and the Pacemaker-Arrhythmia Center; Joseph Germano, DO, Associate Director of Electrophysiology; Palmira M. Cataliotti, CPA, Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer; Seth Bender, MD, Island Cardiac Specialists; Gary J. Schwall, Chief Operating Officer; Gina Berrent, MBA, RCIS, Administrative Director of Operations, Division of Cardiology; Tom Reoch, Project Manager, Engineering; Elaine Rowinski, RN, Director of Nursing, Cardiology; and Marc Adler, MD, MBA, FACP, Director of the Value Based Purchasing Program.

Members of the NYU Winthrop community proudly gathered on February 6, 2014 to celebrate the opening of its newest stateof-the-art electrophysiology (EP) lab at the Hospital. The new EP lab, which is the latest addition to NYU Winthrop’s Pacemaker-Arrhythmia Center, was designed with input from a multidisciplinary team of NYU Winthrop cardiologists, nurses, technicians and anesthesiologists. It is configured for all electrophysiology procedures to treat patients with cardiac arrhythmias (heart rhythm disorders).

The Pacemaker-Arrhythmia Center at NYU Winthrop offers cutting-edge services coupled with highly skilled clinical cardiac electrophysiologists who specialize in the entire range of heart rhythm diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. The Center also was the first on Long Island to establish a cryoablation program to treat patients with atrial fibrillation and currently has the highest volume of cases in the region.

With this new addition, the facility now consists of four dedicated EP laboratories and a separate additional dedicated procedural area for tilt table testing, elective electro-cardioversion – a procedure in which an electric current is used to reset the heart’s rhythm back to its regular pattern – and ICD testing – a test performed to ensure a patient’s implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (which detects and corrects abnormal heart rhythms) is working properly. The laboratories and dedicated electrophysiology staff at NYU Winthrop are among the best in the region.
