A Celebration of Life: NYU Winthrop's 16th Annual Cancer Survivor's Day

Hope, camaraderie and encouragement filled the air during NYU Winthrop's 16th Annual Cancer Survivors Day celebration held in June at the Chateau Briand in Westbury. Attended by nearly 400 cancer survivors, their loved ones and NYU Winthrop staff, the inspiring event provided all with the opportunity to relax and join together for what has become a treasured tradition for the NYU Winthrop family a heartwarming Celebration of Life.

The National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation defines a "survivor" as anyone living with a history of cancer from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life. The annual celebration applauds the resilience of the human spirit and recognizes the significant strides made in the fight against cancer.

During the evening, guests enjoyed inspiring remarks by Barbara Varley-Cosgrove, who spoke about her determination to be a "survivor and not a cancer victim." Mrs. Cosgrove described living a "new normal" as she relayed an open, honest account of dealing with the diagnosis, the disease and difficult treatments. Grateful for the care and support of her physicians, nurses, family and friends, her poignant remarks also buoyed the audience with laughter as she shared personal moments with her beloved husband, who, at times, bolstered her with humor as she endured the effects of treatment.

The resilience and resourcefulness of survivors was praised by speaker Nina D'Abreo, MD, oncologist in the Division of Oncology-Hematology at NYU Winthrop. Dr. D'Abreo also expressed admiration for survivors who selflessly chronicle their experiences and share them with the medical community. Their unique perspectives have helped NYU Winthrop build programs that enhance the quality of survivorship.

The celebration at the Chateau Briand included dinner and dancing, as well as the opportunity to win raffle prizes. NYU Winthrop also held an educational Cancer Survivors Workshop in June, addressing advances in the surgical management of gastrointestinal cancer and the power of nutrition.

NYU Winthrop Hospital 's Cancer Institute is accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, and the Hospital's Breast Health Center is accredited by the prestigious National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers.
