Long Island Foundation's Generosity Changes Lives at NYU Winthrop's Hempstead Pediatric Clinic

(L.-R.) Elizabeth Mavro, MBA, Development Associate - Grants at NYU Winthrop; Melanie Moreno, Certified Child Life Specialist; Nicole Almeida, MS, CCLS, Director of the Child Life Program at NYU Winthrop (seated, right); and Lynn Drucker, Assistant Vice President of Annual and Major Gifts, with patients.

The continuing generosity of the Melville- based Long Island Community Foundation (LICF) has changed the lives of young patients and their families at NYU Winthrop Hospital 's Hempstead Pediatric Clinic, thanks to the renewal of a $50,000 grant.

This is the second grant from LICF, following a $50,000 grant in 2011 that allowed a part-time Child Life Specialist to be hired in the medically underserved com- munity. After seeing the outstanding results of this contribution, the renewal has enabled Certified Child Life Specialist Melanie Moreno, who is bilingual, to stay on full-time. Ms. Moreno works exclusively with families at the Hempstead pediatric practice.

"It's impossible to overstate how meaningful this grant is to the practice and the community," said Lynn Drucker, Assistant Vice President of Annual and Major Gifts at NYU Winthrop. "Melanie has built a trusting relationship with the community, which in turn has made kids healthier. The practice and the people are thriving."

Certified Child Life Specialist Melanie Moreno engages with young pediatric patients at NYU Winthrop's Hempstead Pediatric Clinic.

Child Life Specialists work closely with patients and their families to provide children with a sense of control, according to Warren Rosenfeld, MD, Chairman of Pediatrics at NYU Winthrop. "This program is a vital component of the comprehensive pediatric care that patients receive at NYU Winthrop, and my heartfelt thanks go out to the Long Island Community Foundation, whose generous contributions enable our Child Life team to meet the needs of our pediatric patients and their families at our Hempstead pediatric practice."
