National Awards Recognize Quality Breast Health Care

Patients at NYU Winthrop receive a multidisciplinary approach to breast care. Pictured (l.-r.) are Susana Fuchs, MD, Director of Breast Imaging at NYU Winthrop's Breast Health Center; Nina D'Abreo, MD, Attending Physician, Department of Oncology and Hematology at NYU Winthrop; and Frank Monteleone, MD, FACS, FICS, Director of the Breast Health Program at NYU Winthrop.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and this time of the year, great efforts are made across the globe to raise awareness for the disease. Those who have been impacted by breast cancer know just how important it is to have quality care and patients will find just that at NYU Winthrop.

In addition to a multidisciplinary approach to care delivered by a team of specialists who collaborate to offer risk assessment, diagnosis, evaluation and management of a wide range of malignant and benign breast conditions, NYU Winthrop's Breast Health Center provides patients with complete access to a full range of quality services and specialists all in one convenient location.

A testament to NYU Winthrop's ongoing commitment to providing the highest level of quality breast health care to patients in the community, the Breast Health Center Team, under the leadership of Frank Monteleone, MD, FACS, FICS, Chief of the Division of Breast Services and Director of the Breast Health Program at NYU Winthrop, is consistently being recognized with distinguished national honors.

Recently, the Breast Health Center was named a certified participant in the National Consortium of Breast Centers' Quality program and was recently reaccredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons.

"The national recognitions are reflective of the quality of care that is delivered day after day at NYU Winthrop," said Dr. Monteleone.

NYU Winthrop's Breast Health Center Team works in close collaboration to ensure patients have full access to all of the vital programs and services needed to maintain good breast health. Among the comprehensive breast care services offered at NYU Winthrop are:
  • State-of-the art diagnostic breast imaging, including breast tomosynthesis (3-D) mammography, ultrasonography, MRI, CT and PET/CT scans
  • Minimally invasive biopsy techniques, including stereotactic and ultrasound-guided core needle biopsies, fine needle aspiration and MRI-guided breast biopsies
  • Breast pathology for early diagnosis and treatment of breast disease
  • Conservative surgical techniques for biopsy, lumpectomy and mastectomy
  • Comprehensive medical oncology and radiation oncology services
  • Advanced reconstructive surgery techniques, including DIEP Flap breast reconstruction and oncoplastic surgery
  • Genetic counseling, including breast cancer risk assessment based upon family history

NYU Winthrop was also recently named one of the 2014 America's Best Breast Centers by WomenCertified, Inc. home of the Women's Choice Award. The Women's Choice Award is the only award that identifies the country's best healthcare institutions based on robust criteria that consider female patient satisfaction, clinical excellence and what women say they want from a hospital, including quality physician communications, responsiveness of nurses and support staff, cleanliness and trusted referrals from other women.

"We offer personalized care and advanced diagnostic methods and treatments to patients here in the community," added Dr. Monteleone. "For the same treatment patients might seek out in the city, they can stay on Long Island and come to the Breast Health Center at NYU Winthrop, where they will work with physicians and staff who know their names."
