NYU Winthrop Elects Two New Members to its Board of Directors

The Board of Directors of NYU Winthrop Hospital is a committed group of community and professional leaders who are charged with supporting the mission of NYU Winthrop Hospital and setting the direction for the Hospital's continued growth and expansion. Recently, Woodsburgh resident Lee A. Israel and Garden City resident Michael L. Rafferty were elected to serve as part of this group, whose generosity and dedication carries on a legacy of commitment begun by the Hospital's first Trustees in 1896.

Lee A. Israel

Hon. Lee A. Israel is a valued member of the Long Island community. He currently serves as Mayor of the Incorporated Village of Woodsburgh, where he has lived for the last fifteen years. Prior to his election as Mayor, Mr. Israel served the Village in other capacities: as Trustee; Commissioner of Police; Treasurer; and Commissioner of Roads.

His primary vocation is international business and he serves as a leader of several corporations, including Wesco Manufacturing, Inc.; Global Defense Group Inc.; Upright Imaging of Westchester Inc.; ADR Financial Services Inc.; and F6 Labs/Institute for Homeland Security and Training Inc. He graduated with Honors Distinction from The George Washington University and went on to earn a Master of Business Administration from New York University – Leonard N. Stern School of Business.

Mr. Israel has been a member NYU Winthrop’s Board of Regents, an ambassadorial group that is committed to getting the word out in the community about the important initiatives happening at NYU Winthrop, since 2013. His additional community service includes serving as a Board Member of the UJA-Federation of NY, where he was a 2013 South Shore Inaugural Honoree for Inspiration & Leadership; Board Member for Five Towns Community Chest; and a member of the Advisory Board of the Nassau County Police Foundation. He is a member of The Woodmere Club and The Woodmere Bay Yacht Club.

Mr. Israel and his wife of 22 years, Raquel, have two children, Jackson and Madison.

Michael L. Rafferty

Michael L. Rafferty is Principal and CEO of the Garden City-based Rafferty Holdings, LLC. Over the past 25 years, Rafferty Holdings has grown to become a diversified financial services company. His businesses include Rafferty Capital Markets, a registered broker- dealer; Direxion Investments, a $9 billion ETF/Fund platform; and Hilton Capital Management, a wealth management business with almost $1 billion under management. Previously, Mr. Rafferty served as a senior bond trader at Merrill Lynch.

Mr. Rafferty graduated from Boston College in 1991. He serves as a Board Member and Treasurer of Little Flower Children and Family Services and the Young Presidents' Organization, and is involved with several other business and charitable organizations.

Mr. Rafferty resides in Garden City, NY, with his wife, Kathryn, and their two children, Aidan and Ryan.
