Growing for the Future: NYU Winthrop and NYU Langone Medical Center Announce Plans to Affiliate

In the ever changing world of healthcare, it is important for institutions to be forward thinking in their partnerships and align with those who share a mutual commitment to growth and quality patient care. With these goals in mind, NYU Winthrop Hospital and NYU Langone Medical Center (NYU Langone) recently announced approval by their respective Boards of an affiliation agreement that will bring the two organizations together to expand, enhance, and clinically integrate their healthcare networks on Long Island.

The affiliation will extend NYU Langone’s presence on Long Island, while increasing support for NYU Winthrop’s established network of inpatient and outpatient services. At the same time, it bolsters NYU Winthrop’s access to NYU Langone’s extensive offering of medical and surgical specialties. Regulatory approval for the new affiliation is currently underway, with the aim that approvals will be completed in early 2017.

"We have been working closely with NYU Winthrop over the last several months to assess whether a partnership between our institutions would benefit each of our organizations, as well as the patients and families who turn to us for help.  We quickly realized that an affiliation would allow our institutions to enhance the range and quality of services offered to the residents of Long Island, as well as grow key ambulatory services and the physician network across the region, with NYU Winthrop as the primary inpatient hospital," said Robert I. Grossman, MD, dean and CEO of NYU Langone.  "I am confident that this affiliation will allow both of our institutions to collaborate and share best practices to better meet the healthcare needs of the communities we serve."

According to John Collins, NYU Winthrop’s President and CEO, "We have been successful in completing this agreement with NYU Langone because both parties share a mutual respect and a mutual commitment to delivering the highest quality healthcare to the residents of the New York region. I think NYU Langone recognizes that NYU Winthrop stands as a truly unique healthcare institution on Long Island – a major academic and research hospital that delivers high quality care in an extremely personal and compassionate environment.  And we recognize in NYU Langone a partner who shares our commitment to excellence, who places the utmost value on the contributions of our clinical staff, and  who will be able to help us continue to expand our services to meet the needs of our community as well as provide access to a whole new source of world-class medical care."

Some of the key components of the affiliation agreement include an initial capital investment and development of a long term master plan which will serve as a framework for future changes and expansion of the campus for both inpatient and ambulatory activities based upon projected needs; and implementation and integration of the Epic electronic medical records system that will be focused on NYU Winthrop’s ambulatory practices to develop a system-wide, state-of-the art IT infrastructure and connectivity to support clinical integration and population health management initiatives and analytics.

According to Charles M. Strain, Chairman of the Board of Directors at NYU Winthrop, "Since the founding of NYU Winthrop over 100 years ago, it has been the responsibility of its Board of Directors to ensure that the hospital delivers the highest quality healthcare to the population it serves. Each member of our Board takes that responsibility very seriously. We are confident that this affiliation with NYU Langone will allow us to deliver even higher quality care for the next 100 years and beyond."
