Always on Call: Unique Program Offers Around-the-Clock Primary Care

When Port Washington resident Michelle Russo decided to enroll in a program that would give her 24/7 access to her long time primary care physician, Jackie Orfanos, MD, she never anticipated the life-saving care she’d receive as a result.

“I enrolled in the MDVIP program three years ago and boy, am I glad I did!” said Ms. Russo recently.

The MDVIP program offers a personalized approach to primary care medicine that provides patients with greater access to their physician, as well as more comprehensive plans for achieving their personal health and wellness goals. At NYU Winthrop, this service is offered exclusively by Dr. Orfanos.

“The program has three main components – access, prevention and education. It enables me to support my patients in every aspect of their health,” said Dr. Orfanos.

For an annual fee of $1,500, which is tax deductible, the MDVIP Program provides patients with an enhanced level of service that includes – but is not limited to – same or next day appointments with no wait times, comprehensive physical evaluations coupled with tailored wellness plans, well-coordinated multidisciplinary care and 24/7 access to the physician via cell phone.

These services certainly proved beneficial for Ms. Russo, who, upon returning from a trip with her family, “just wasn’t feeling right,” and called Dr. Orfanos. The two quickly convened in Dr. Orfanos’ office in Garden City, and upon thorough examination, Dr. Orfanos determined that Ms. Russo needed emergency medical attention and arranged for her to be seen immediately at NYU Winthrop.

The Emergency Room medical team at NYU Winthrop was ready and quickly determined that Ms. Russo was suffering from a staph infection in her clavicle joint, which had spread throughout her body.

After spending 10 days at NYU Winthrop where she was monitored by a team of experts and received around-the-clock intravenous antibiotic treatment, followed by a rigorous three-month regimen at home, Ms. Russo made a full recovery.

MDVIP Membership Advantages:

  • Ability to reach your physician at any time
  • Same or next day appointments with no waits
  • A personalized wellness plan that includes comprehensive evaluations and counseling
  • Online Personal Health Records
  • MDVIP Connect – a personalized website tailored to your specific health needs and goals
  • Preferred access to NYU Winthrop Hospital specialists

“It was an eye opening moment for me when I returned for my first follow up visit and learned that had I waited another few hours to seek medical attention, the outcome may have been quite different,” she said.

Patients like Ms. Russo can have full confidence in the timely and comprehensive care they’ll receive through the MDVIP Program. Dr. Orfanos sees patients at all hours of the day, even making house calls for elderly patients. Appointments run more than 30 minutes – and often times as long as an hour – so that Dr. Orfanos may get the full scope of each patient’s health needs as well as gain a better understanding of any personal or physiological issues that they are facing. And when the expertise of other specialists is needed, Dr. Orfanos will personally coordinate the care, often expediting patient wait times.

As an added benefit to the program, participants have the opportunity to enjoy a host of wellness-related initiatives coordinated by Dr. Orfanos’ office including “Spin with the Doctor” exercise classes, cooking demonstrations and presentations on topics such as breast cancer and maintaining a healthy diet.

“Medicine is changing,” said Dr. Orfanos, “and this program enables me to give my patients the time and attention they deserve, which in turn leads to better diagnoses and treatments.”

In addition to the Program’s annual fee, members are responsible for the copayments associated with their regular insurance.
