NYU Winthrop Supports National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

The American Cancer Society (ACS) estimates that about one in eight women in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime.

breast cancer awareness month

The ACS also reports that most doctors feel that early detection tests for breast cancer save many thousands of lives each year. That’s because the goal of screening exams, such as mammograms, is to find cancers before they start to cause symptoms. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, bringing to light the vital importance of regular mammograms and the early detection of breast cancer.

With the goal of raising awareness of breast cancer in our community, NYU Winthrop Hospital was pleased to show its support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month by sponsoring a number of important initiatives aimed at promoting breast cancer awareness, sharing information on the disease, providing greater access to services and supporting patients throughout their breast cancer journeys.

Employees Get Their Pink On

On October 17, 2013, employees from various areas of the Hospital wore pink to show their unwavering support of breast cancer awareness month.

Paint the Mall Pink

20-3.jpgThroughout the month of October, NYU Winthrop was proud to present a series of events at Roosevelt Field Mall. Some of the month’s activities included a NYU Winthrop Breast Health information table with educational materials about breast cancer, breast cancer prevention and NYU Winthrop’s Breast Health Services, as well as a Wall of Hope where mall patrons could make a small donation in exchange for a pink ribbon to be placed the wall in honor of a loved one or friend. All proceeds support programs and services for breast cancer patients and their families. What’s more, NYU Winthrop was proud to sponsor the Simon Fashion Now Show on October 11 and 12, 2013.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk

Staff and friends of NYU Winthrop joined together at the American Cancer Society’s 2013 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at Jones Beach on October 20, 2013. It was an inspiring day that helped the NYU Winthrop team raise funds for breast cancer research, education, advocacy and patient services.

Pink Party at NYU Winthrop

20-4.jpgNYU Winthrop’s Breast Health Center also hosted its first “Pink Party,” an event held exclusively for the Center’s patients, past and present. It was an inspirational evening that celebrated patients’ strength and resilience and the great strides that have been made in the detection and treatment of breast cancer. Attendees enjoyed dinner, entertainment and door prizes, and had the opportunity to connect with other survivors.

Gala of Hope
