Interventioal Cardiology Fellowship
The interventional cardiology fellowship program at NYU Winthrop Hospital is a one-year ACGME accredited program that prides itself on selecting and ultimately producing the finest interventional cardiologists in the country. The Program emphasizes clinical and research areas relevant to interventional cardiology and provides trainees with experience in all aspects of cardiac and vascular intervention. The objective is to train competent, compassionate Interventionalists who will be leaders in their field.
NYU Winthrop Hospital is prepared to meet the needs of the Interventional Cardiology Fellow by providing a comprehensive curriculum that expands their knowledge base, while exposing them to innovative technology and research at the point of care. The experience is enriched and enhanced by active participation in the general Cardiology Fellowship Program. The fellows are immersed in a one year program that emphasizes superb guideline-based clinical care combined with technical expertise and high procedural volume. The entire range of interventional cardiology is represented, including coronary, peripheral and structural procedures. The program also benefits from a growing national reputation and an established regional status highlighted by superior and consistent PCI outcomes within New York State.
There are dedicated conferences that emphasize interventional topics, involving local as well as guest speakers in addition to journal clubs, dedicated research and other multi-disciplinary conferences. Fellows have been successful in presenting research and cases at national meetings, and following through to publication. Faculty, both voluntary and full-time, take an active role in fellow education and support, including one-on-one teaching, research and career mentoring. The fellowship program also gains specialized expertise from its affiliation with NYU Winthrop’s Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Center, Aortic Aneurysm Center, and Heart Failure Center, which bring patient populations to the lab for unique procedures oftentimes unavailable at other hospitals.
Srihari S. Naidu, MD, is skilled in all aspects of interventional cardiology, including atrial septal defect and patent foramen ovale closure, alcohol septal ablation for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy,aortic and mitral valvuloplasty and percutaneous ventricular assist devices, as well as peripheral and coronary intervention.
Dr. Naidu is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease and Interventional Cardiology.
A recognized expert in the management of patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, Dr. Naidu runs NYU Winthrop’s comprehensive, multidisciplinary Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Treatment Center, deemed a Center of Excellence by the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Association. The Center treats close to 400 patients and families with this rare genetic disease from the tri- state area and beyond, making it one of the top 10 busiest programs in the country. For his expertise in the performance of alcohol septal ablation, Dr. Naidu was selected to help write the AHA/ACC Guideline for the Diagnosis and Management of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, published in 2011.
Prior to joining NYU Winthrop, he was Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology at New York Presbyterian Hospital- Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he was the second highest volume operator and developed a Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Center, performing Cornell’s first series of alcohol septal ablations.
Under his leadership, NYU Winthrop’s Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory has developed a regional and national reputation for excellent patient outcomes and for pioneering the latest technologies and techniques on Long Island, including the first implantations of the Xience and Endeavor drug-eluting stents and the first placement of the Impella ventricular assist device for high-risk angioplasty. The lab is also one of the busiest, performing leading-edge, minimally invasive aortic valve replacement (TAVR).
His postgraduate training included Fellowships in Interventional Cardiology and General Cardiology at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center, where he received the 2004 Outstanding Teaching Award. He completed his residency in internal medicine at New York Hospital- Cornell Medical Center, and received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Brown University, where he is the President of the Brown Medical School Board of Directors.
Dr. Naidu is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (ACC), Fellow of the American Heart Association (AHA), and one of 20 Trustees of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Intervention (SCAI). He is also an Associate Professor of Medicine with Tenure at the Stony Brook University School of Medicine, and serves on several nationally appointed committees, including the ACC Interventional Science Council, the AHA Scientific Program Committee and TCT Program Committee.
Dr. Naidu has published over 100 original articles, book chapters and abstracts dealing with angioplasty outcomes, new technology and innovative procedural modifications. He lectures regularly throughout the United States and Europe, and routinely serves as an invited abstract reviewer and speaker for ACC, AHA, TCT and SCAI scientific sessions.
Kevin Marzo, MD, NYU Winthrop’s Chief of Cardiology since 2003, is an accomplished cardiologist and interventional cardiologist skilled in the latest treatments of cardiovascular disease (CVD). At the Hospital since 1992, he has played an integral role in transforming the Division of Cardiology into a state-of-the-art cardiovascular program. Under his leadership, the program has earned local and national recognition for high quality, ever-expanding cardiovascular services, including perennial acknowledgements as “One of the Best in the New York Metro area” from U.S. News and World Report.
Board Certified in Interventional Cardiology, Cardiovascular Medicine and Internal Medicine, Dr. Marzo’s clinical interests focus on general cardiology, heart disease and coronary interventions. Over the past decade, he has been recognized by New York State for percutaneous coronary intervention patient outcomes that exceed the statewide average.
Most recently, Dr. Marzo was instrumental in coordinating a multidisciplinary team to initiate and support NYU Winthrop’s use of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) — a revolutionary technique for non-surgical replacement of aortic valves in patients with symptomatic aortic valve disease. Since launching the TAVR program in 2012, NYU Winthrop has become a national leader in the use of TAVR and one of the few centers in New York State participating in research examining its effectiveness.
Dr. Marzo’s postgraduate clinical training included Fellowships in Interventional and Clinical Cardiology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and a residency in internal medicine at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. He received his medical degree from Northwestern University after completing the school’s Six-Year Honors Program in Medicine. Graduating with “Utmost Distinction,” he was also elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, the medical honor society. Dr. Marzo is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC) and a Diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine, as well as the American Heart Association, where he has served on the Board of Directors.
Currently an Associate Professor of Medicine at SUNY School of Medicine at Stony Brook, Dr. Marzo’s research interests focus on the management of coronary artery disease, acute myocardial infarction and valvular heart disease, as well as CVD prevention, risk factors and lifestyle modification for patients with — or at risk for — cardiovascular disease. For the past two decades, he has been a primary investigator in over 50 clinical trials, presenting at many professional conferences and publishing articles and abstracts in leading peer-reviewed publications, including Circulation and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. He has also contributed chapters to medical textbooks.
Dr. Marzo has dedicated his life’s work to educating individuals in his clinical practice and the community-at-large about heart disease risk and prevention strategies, developing community outreach programs that engage patients in healthy lifestyle activities. He has also helped establish the Woman’s Cardiovascular Wellness Program and Center for Cardiovascular Lifestyle Medicine at NYU Winthrop. Dr. Marzo has been honored by American Heart Association for his involvement in the Go-Red for Women. He is also dedicated to eradicating the disparity in healthcare provided for men versus women and minorities.
Dr. Marzo is a passionate believer in a patient-centered approach to cardiovascular health and wellness in an effort to reduce risk for all individuals with — or at risk for — cardiovascular disease.
Stephen Green, MD, is an experienced interventional cardiologist. Prior to joining NYU Winthrop in 2013, he performed over 27,000 cardiac catheterizations at the North Shore-LIJ Health System, where he served as Associate Chairman of the Department of Cardiology, as well as Chief of Cardiology.
Dr. Green is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease and Interventional Cardiology. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association, and the Society for Cardiac Angiography and Intervention.
His postgraduate clinical training included a Fellowship in Cardiology at North Shore University Hospital. He completed his internal medicine internship and residency at the Cornell Cooperating Hospitals, North Shore University Hospital and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and earned his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine.
A participant in many national and international research trials involving cardiac catheterization, treatments for heart attacks and heart medicines, Dr. Green has authored over 60 research papers and abstracts related to interventional cardiology, treatment of heart attacks, use of stents and coronary CT scanning.
He has served on local research grant review committees for the American Heart Association and the Long Island Heart Council. Nationally, he served on the American Heart Association Committee on Interventional Cardiology, and has been a reviewer of abstracts for the American Heart Association National Scientific Sessions National Meeting. Dr. Green was an Associate Professor of Medicine at Cornell University and New York University, and most recently at Hofstra University.

A brief description of the Interventional Cardiology Fellow Curriculum:
- Fellows will spend the majority of their time in the interventional laboratories, where they will be responsible for the pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of all patients. They will be assisted by the cath lab PAs /NPs(6), CV-technologists (12) and recovery room nurses (20). Fellows will understand the indications and contraindications to all planned procedures, and be directly involved in the decision-making process and technical aspects of all diagnostic and interventional procedures. The post-procedure management will be discussed after each case.
- Fellows will be responsible for an outpatient office experience, where they will see pre-procedure and post-procedure interventional patients, as per ACGME requirements.
- Fellows will be responsible for initial inpatient consultations on specialized procedures such as ASD/PFO closure.
- Procedural volume is anticipated to be between 250 and 500 interventions per fellow, with additional 75 peripheral interventions and 25 structural interventions per year.
- Fellows will learn from both the full-time and voluntary staff, with an expectation that they will therefore learn a multitude of techniques and styles.
- Fellows will be responsible for teaching and supervising the general cardiology fellows on rotation in the lab.
- Fellows will be responsible for interventional peer review of cases that surface through the Cardiology Quality Improvement process, presenting cases at regularly scheduled monthly sessions.
- Fellows are expected to participate in ongoing clinical trials, of which there are typically 3-5 at any time. Fellows serve as sub-investigators on individual trials, and assist with recruitment and enrollment of patients, and with the follow-up process as required.
- Fellows are expected to pursue scholarly activity towards the presentation of original research or case reviews at national meetings. In addition, at least one publication per fellow is expected. There is adequate attending mentorship to facilitate this requirement, as past fellows have presented routinely at AHA, TCT, ACC and SCAI scientific sessions.
- Fellows may take part in database analysis projects through NYU Winthrop’s affiliation with the NHLBI Dynamic Registry, New York State PCI Database and the Long Island Angioplasty Database.
- Cath Conference: Held every Wednesday throughout the year, these conferences focus on didactic sessions of various relevant interventional topics. Lectures are given by general cardiology fellows, interventional fellows, cardiology attendings, and visiting physicians. There are also regularly scheduled film review sessions at both the general cardiology and interventional cardiology level.
- Journal Club and Research Meetings: Held regularly as per ACGME requirements, to review ongoing clinical trials and discuss manuscripts of particular and timely relevance.
- Vascular Conference: Weekly conference held with interventional radiology, vascular surgery and interventional cardiology, to discuss endovascular case selection, and procedural techniques.
Regional Conferences and National Meetings
- Fellows participate in the Long Island Cardiology Fellows Forum, which brings together cardiologists and fellows from all regional cardiology fellowship programs to discuss cases and review management at dinner. The best cases are selected for submission to national meetings including TCT and SCAI.
Vacation and National Meetings
- Four (4) weeks vacation, as one or two-week blocks. Not permitted during July or during the final two weeks of June.
- National meeting attendance (AHA, ACC, TCT) based on selection for national presentation of research or case reviews.
- Fellow Conferences: One meeting allowed per fellow, to enhance board preparedness.
The John D. Miller Interventional Cardiology Pavilion houses 4 cardiac catheterization laboratories, two of which are fully peripheral capable with larger image acquisition and digital subtraction angiography. These labs are not shared with any other service. The 4 labs are combined with a 18 bed dedicated invasive cardiology recovery room, and a separate 6 bed overnight stay unit. All four labs are fitted with integrated tableside IVUS and FFR. The interventional program performs over 5000 procedures annually, including 1500 coronary interventions, 200 peripheral interventions, and 50-100 structural interventions per year. The lab also sees approximately 200 acute ST elevation myocardial infarctions per year, and runs an active and successful door-to-balloon program. The full range of interventional techniques and technology are represented, with the fellow typically performing 250-500 coronary interventions per year, 25 structural interventions per year, and over 75 peripheral interventions per year. Most importantly, fellows leave feeling comfortable to perform independently and at a high level post-fellowship.
Fellows have access to the Invasive Lounge, Personal Locker space and ample dedicated PC workstations for research and educational purposes

Housing accommodations, at heavily subsidized rates, are available in apartment buildings and residential homes within close proximity to the NYU Winthrop Hospital campus. If a member of the house staff requests NYU Winthrop housing and it cannot be provided, a live-off allowance may be provided.

House Staff Lounge
NYU Winthrop Hospital’s new house staff lounge is accessible 24/7. The spacious and comfortable lounge is equipped with computers, wifi, television, foosball table, lockers, lounge chairs, as well as coffee and tea.
NYU Winthrop Hospital residents and fellows receive four weeks of vacation (20 working days) within each contract year.
PGY 1 level residents are eligible to attend one local conference (New York Metropolitan Area), at the discretion of the Program Director. House staff at the PGY 2 level and above are eligible for one trip, maximum of five consecutive weekdays, to an approved professional conference in the continental United States each year, at the discretion of the Program Director.
Reimbursement for allowable educational expenses is available up to a maximum of $75 for PGY 1 residents and $700 for PGY2 and higher residents and subspecialty fellows.
TransitChek Commuter Benefit Program
The TransitChek Commuter Benefit Program is available. This program allows the resident/fellow to deduct pre-tax money to pay for mass transit or commuter parking (up to a predefined maximum).

Medical and Dental Coverage
NYU Winthrop Hospital is committed to providing residents with a comprehensive benefits program. Benefits include generous medical, pharmaceutical, and dental coverage, as well as flexible spending accounts. Benefits are effective from the first day of residency/fellowship.
Residents/fellows are covered by short-term, non-occupational disability insurance (up to six months). To be eligible for disability insurance benefits, one must be on the payroll for a minimum of twenty (20) work days (four consecutive weeks) and unable to work for more than seven (7) calendar days, due an injury or illness that does not arise out of, and in the course of, employment. These benefits, which supplement lost income, are based on salary level and are payable for up to 26 weeks after the employees accrued sick time has been used.
The long term disability benefit begins after six months of short term disability. It pays a monthly benefit for an extended illness or injury. The monthly benefit is offset by benefits from other sources, such as Workers Compensation and Social Security.
House staff receive compensation, in accordance with the Workers Compensation Law, for any illness or injury which is job related. Benefits include payment for medical expenses and lost pay.
Family and Medical Leave
In accordance with the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) of 1993, NYU Winthrop Hospital will grant residents/fellows unpaid leave(s) for up to 12 weeks in a 12-month period. To be eligible, one must have worked 12 months at the Hospital and a minimum of 1250 hours in the twelve-month period prior to the start date of the requested leave. FMLA leave may be granted for the birth, adoption or acceptance for foster care of a child; for the care of a child, spouse, or parent with a serious health condition; or for the employee’s own serious illness.
Residents/fellows may to return to their training program after a leave of absence, without loss of training status, if their leave does not exceed that allowed by the specialty boards.
Professional Liability Insurance
NYU Winthrop’s residents/fellows are provided with professional liability coverage for the duration of their training through the Hospital’s self-insurance program. Coverage provides legal defense and protection against awards from claims reported or filed after the completion of graduate medical education if the alleged acts are within the scope of the education program.
Basic Life Insurance is provided by the hospital at no cost to the resident/fellow. This benefit equals 1 X the resident/fellow’s annual salary payable to the beneficiary. Residents/fellows may purchase additional voluntary life insurance up to 3X their annual salary (combined basic and voluntary may not exceed $500,000).
Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance
Provided by the hospital at no cost to the resident/fellow.
A Defined Contribution 403(b) Plan is available for voluntary pre-tax/after-tax contribution.
Employee Health Services
NYU Winthrop Hospital residents and fellows are provided with pre-employment physicals, annual health assessments, and Tuberculosis screenings, as well as vaccines and required health surveillance free of charge through the hospital’s Employee Health Service. In addition, if a member of the house staff becomes ill while at work, he or she will be seen at no charge by an Employee Health practitioner, or by the Emergency Room staff if the Employee Health Service practitioner is not available.
Free assessment, referral and brief psychotherapy services are available on a confidential basis to members of the House Staff and their immediate families.

The village of Mineola is a wonderful place to live and work. Mineola affords one the opportunity to enjoy the relaxed Long Island lifestyle, while living only 30 minutes away (via LIRR) from the attractions of NYC.
The close vicinity of the hospital, where most of the resident housing is located, is an excellent location for both families and single residents. Aside from a LIRR station leading directly into NYC, the area is surrounded by a quiet residential neighborhood and a large park with sports facilities, open fields, and a local library. Two fellows are chosen per year. The successful candidate is board certified or board eligible in general cardiology, after completing a three-year cardiology fellowship program including diagnostic angiography. Those with a proven track record for clinical excellence, professionalism, maturity, work ethic, and scholarly activity will be preferentially selected for an interview. Three Letters of recommendation must directly discuss the candidate’s potential for technical expertise in the field. Application deadline is January 15, with interviews in February and decision by March 15.

Resident and fellow Rotations
Residents and fellows can apply for a rotation with any department by contacting the academic coordinator for that program via email with a copy of your CV and the dates you are requesting for your rotation.
The department will review your CV and let you know if there are any rotation spots available for the time requested. If you are approved for the rotation the Office of Academic Affairs will contact you with the necessary paperwork.
