Message From The Chief Academic Officer
Thank you for your interest in NYU Winthrop Hospital's Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs. I strongly encourage you to launch your medical career at NYU Winthrop. Our Hospital is a multifaceted institution with an abiding commitment to patient care and an unparalleled determination to provide the finest in medical education. It is also a teaching center keenly aware of the future. We know that innovation and flexibility are vital to survival and growth, and we remain open to new concepts, new techniques and the evolution of medicine.
NYU Winthrop Hospital has been a focal point of academic medicine on Long Island and is now very proud to partner with the NYU Long Island School of Medicine, a newly LCME accredited, innovative 3-year medical school located on the hospital campus with a mission to educate exemplary physicians and academic leaders in primary care. In addition, we sponsor over 30 medical and surgical residency and fellowship training programs where 300 physicians have chosen to pursue their post-graduate medical education.
NYU Winthrop's house staff comprises more than 300 physicians who have chosen to pursue their medical careers in one of our 28 residency and fellowship programs. We have become an institution of choice for residents from a broad range of competitive medical schools.
The Hospital's Statement of Commitment to Graduate Medical Education assures house staff of its commitment to excellence in medical education. The Hospital assures: a faculty with the necessary breadth of clinical knowledge and skills, as well as abiding personal commitments to teaching; a learning environment enriched by an active program of basic and clinical research; the resources necessary for restructuring and adapting our GME curricula to a rapidly changing health care arena; state of the art library, media and conference support services, and an environment in which opportunities for academic growth are maximized by attention to quality of life, including adherence to New York State duty hours limitations, provision of competitive benefits, access to affordable housing and meals, and zero tolerance of harassment, of any nature, at any time.
At NYU Winthrop, we take mentoring very seriously and we do it well. A full-time faculty of approximately 648, supplemented by a voluntary staff of more than 900 physicians, teaches and mentors our house staff. The house staff has full access to faculty in each program, as well as to an array of support services to ensure that learning their profession can be their top priority.
Complementing the clinical and educational endeavors at NYU Winthrop are basic science and clinical research efforts that provide the house staff with many opportunities to learn scientific methodologies, present findings at national conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals. This enterprise attracts federal grants (NIH, National Cancer Institute), state and foundation grants and hundreds of concurrent clinical trials.
NYU Winthrop invests in and supports an academic environment with uncompromised educational programs, in which residents are professionally nurtured, intellectually challenged and personally respected.
Our goal is to ensure that you will be prepared for all aspects of medical practice, and, to that end, I invite you to explore the many opportunities available at NYU Winthrop.
